Art Nouveau objects in Riga

Cēsu iela 43 (1910)

Architect: Edmunds fon Trompovskis

This 6 -storey masonry apartment house with shops designed by architect Edmund von Trompowsky and together with Brīvības 170 and 172, powerfully marks the intersection of Brīvības iela and Cēsu iela. It is one of Edmund von Trompovsky’s few Art Nouveau examples and is characteristic of the “Perpendicular” Art Nouveau, where the owerall building profiles is defined by architectural forms and elements. A closer look at the central part of the façade reveals the water lily flower and leaf motif ornamentation traced in the plastered surfaces, which from a distance look like simply textured surfaces.
